Politics in the United States have become increasingly divided in the past decade. There’s blame to be had on both sides of the political aisle for this, but the emergence of Donald Trump and the Left’s negative reaction to him has certainly not helped things as far as this divisiveness goes. In this day and age, if you differ from someone politically it’s almost expected that you should consider that person your enemy. That’s how the mainstream media and political establishment want you to think at least.
But most Americans just want their politicians to exhibit common sense when creating policies that will help improve the nation. When you get down to brass tacks, the vast majority of U.S. citizens agree on many key policy issues, such as securing the border, reducing inflation, and putting the livelihood of Americans first before other countries.
But there are some in the political establishment class who want to increase the divide among Americans. This helps them to stay in power longer and therefore causes more inefficiency in the government as far as getting things done for the American people. Simply put, these corrupt politicians and bureaucrats profit off of dividing the U.S. population.
However, not every Washington, D.C. politician thinks this way. There are some on the Left who genuinely want to work with Donald Trump and help get the country back on the right track, even if that means receiving criticism from their own party. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), is a Leftist congressman who is willing to compromise with Trump on his agenda. He’s also encouraging fellow Democrats to do the same.
Rep. Tom Suozzi Urges Democrats to Seek Bipartisanship with Trump’s Second Term
Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., kicked off the new year by publishing a guest essay in The New York Times, urging his fellow Democrats to abandon their resistance tactics and collaborate with President-elect Donald Trump as he begins his second term. In his essay, Suozzi acknowledged that the results of the 2024 election indicate a clear message from voters: the Democratic Party should pivot toward compromise on critical issues like the economy and immigration rather than continuing the obstructionist stance it held during Trump’s first term.
“As a Democratic member of Congress, I know my party will be tempted to hold fast against Mr. Trump at every turn: uniting against his bills, blocking his nominees and grinding the machinery of the House and the Senate to a halt. That would be a mistake,” Suozzi wrote. The congressman, who represents New York’s 3rd Congressional District — a seat he won after former GOP Rep. George Santos was expelled from Congress — expressed caution about Trump’s willingness to reach across the aisle. Suozzi referenced some of the president-elect’s actions and decisions since the election that have raised concerns.
“I’m no dupe: Some of Mr. Trump’s actions offer little reassurance that he is ready to embrace the bipartisanship and compromise essential to a functioning democracy,” he stated, pointing specifically to Trump’s “radical cabinet picks,” his demands regarding the recent government spending bill, and the “hubris” of including high-profile figures like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in Capitol Hill discussions. Despite his reservations, Suozzi offered practical advice for both Trump and his own party. He urged the president-elect to “embrace his inner dealmaker and negotiate with the other party that holds just shy of half of the seats on Capitol Hill and key governorships around the country.” If Trump takes this approach, Suozzi argued, “Democrats should meet him halfway rather than be the Party of No.”
Suozzi also criticized what he described as his party’s “significant leftward shift” in recent years, arguing that Americans want bipartisan problem-solving rather than unrelenting political deadlock. “But as a common-sense Democrat who won in a district that Mr. Trump also won, I am certain our closely divided electorate would rather have bipartisan solutions than political gridlock,” he said. While Suozzi recognized that Trump’s victory might feel like a “mandate” to some, he cautioned against interpreting it as a call for “one-party rule.” Instead, he argued, “the results of the 2024 campaign were a mandate for border security, immigration reform, low inflation, economic stability and common ground on culture-war fights.”
The congressman offered specific examples of areas where Democrats could compromise without abandoning their core principles. On climate change, Suozzi suggested balancing environmental goals with practical concerns about energy costs. “Democrats cannot abandon our zeal to combat climate change. At the same time, let’s balance our commitment to environmental protection with pragmatic measures that safeguard affordable utility bills and manageable costs at the pump,” he wrote.
He also called for a more respectful approach to social issues. “Let’s move beyond the relentless attacks on widely held religious values while ensuring that the rights, safety and dignity of all are upheld,” Suozzi said. Additionally, he advocated for government efficiency and accountability while maintaining the party’s commitment to programs like Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act.
Ending on a hopeful note, Suozzi revealed that his New Year’s resolution is to prioritize bipartisan cooperation and common sense over partisan bickering. His message to his party and the country is clear: compromise and collaboration are essential for progress in a divided America. But will his fellow Democrats hold up their end of the bargain should they accept Suozzi’s terms? In this day and age it’s hard to find politicians on both sides of the aisle working together to help improve the well-being of the country. But Rep. Suozzi sounds hopeful that this can be done despite the Left’s negative thoughts and attitude towards Donald Trump.
What are your thoughts on Rep. Tom Suozzi’s plan to compromise with Trump? Do you agree with it and do you think it will work? Let us know in the comments below!
Tom’s comments are common sense. There should be no question unless you just HATE DJT and that is NO EXCUSE, period!!!
Now a Democrat is using common sense. We need more like him.
What are we doing as a people? We don’t another country to invade us and taking over our country, ALL they have to do is just wait and we will destroy ourselves. What are we doing? Look I didn’t like that Biden let millions of immigrants into our country, I feel that are trying to destroy us, but when are people going to realize, GOD, is in control. When we are not willing to seek his will, then we will have to pay the price for our failure to trust that he is in control. We have a choice to trust him, or we will perish.
Amen Travis
Finally a voice of reason. Now if I can urge my senators to behave likewise, I will have been successful. This infighting has to stop. This open border has cost so much loss of life the congress and senate must work with this new President to protect we the people
I think Congressman Suozzi will be a thinking representative. This complete rejection of ideas just because they are submitted by the opposing party is sheer stupidity. Who are you representing? Your party or America? Thank you Mr Suozzi
