CNN’s Own Data Analyst Highlights Democrats’ Historic Collapse
Even on friendly territory like CNN, senior data reporter Harry Enten couldn’t hide his amusement as he revealed congressional Democrats plunging to their lowest approval ratings ever, underscoring the party’s growing disconnect with voters after failed tactics like the recent government shutdown.
Enten delivered the grim numbers during a segment on CNN News Central, laughing as he described the situation.
“Democrats, in the minds of the American public, are lower than the Dead Sea,” Enten began, laughing a bit as he added, “The net approval rating for Democrats in Congress? … The lowest ever. Look at this! Overall, they are 55 points underwater. Their approval rating is south of 20%. It’s even worse when you look at independents. Look at this: -61 points! That means that their approval rating is 61 points lower than their disapproval rating!”
“Quinnipiac has been polling this question for the better part of the 21st century. They have never found Democrats, at least those in Congress, in worse shape than they are right now.”
Even Democrats Turn Against Their Own Party
The plunge hits hardest within the Democratic base, revealing internal frustration with leadership failures.

Enten attributed the sharp drop—from +22 net approval among Democrats in October to -6 now—to dissatisfaction over the shutdown outcome, where President Trump prevailed.
Quinnipiac polling shows overall approval south of 20% (around 18%), with 73% disapproving, yielding a -55 net rating—the worst in decades of tracking.
Diminished Prospects for 2026 Midterms
The toxic numbers have slashed Democrats’ generic ballot advantage to less than half of what it was at comparable points in successful cycles like 2006 and 2018.
Enten warned that while Democrats might still gain seats, these figures signal vulnerability.
“Democrats, in the minds of the American public, are lower than the Dead Sea.”
“Cong Dems now have a -55 net approval, an all-time low & lower than the Dead Sea. 2 causes: Dems gives them a -6 pt net approval(!), & they’re at -61 pts with indies! The effect? Dems lead on the generic ballot is less than half of what it was at this [point] in the 06 & 18 cycles.”
These rock-bottom ratings expose the consequences of obstructive strategies and out-of-touch priorities, leaving Democrats in a precarious position as voters increasingly reject their approach.
