Massive Democrat endorsement of scandal-stricken candidate is turning heads

Warren Endorses “Her Kind of Man” Amid Candidate’s Troubling Past

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) traveled to Portland, Maine, over the weekend to rally behind left-wing Senate hopeful Graham Platner, describing him in glowing terms as the outsider needed to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Despite Platner’s history of controversies—including a chest tattoo resembling a N-zi symbol and old Reddit posts that blamed s-xual assault victims and defended certain Hamas actions—Warren stood firmly by her endorsement.

At the rally, Warren praised Platner’s background and fighting spirit:

“Graham is a combat veteran. He’s an oyster farmer, he is an organizer, and he is the person who is going to beat Susan Collins.”

She added:

“Insiders who go along to get along are not going to hose the corruption out of Washington. We need Graham Platner to come in and get the corruption out of Washington.”

Warren framed the race as a battle for systemic change:

“There are people who realize that when the system is this broken, when there are this many billionaires who have this much control over our country, it is no longer time to make little change at the margins, it is time for big, structural change.”

Candidate’s Controversies and Apologies

Platner, a U.S. Marine and Army veteran turned oyster farmer, has faced scrutiny over decade-old Reddit posts from 2013-2014 that appeared to blame victims of s-xual assault and offered controversial takes on Hamas. He also had a chest tattoo identified as a N-zi symbol, which he later covered up and apologized for.

In a 2025 apology video, Platner stated:

“For those of you who have read these things and been offended, have read these things and seen someone that you don’t recognize, I am deeply sorry.”

He has attributed some past views to military trauma and the “hyper masculine, hyper violent” culture he experienced in service. Platner has since focused his campaign on fighting corruption and a “rigged” system, telling supporters at a recent event:

“The money went somewhere, and it wasn’t down here. It was stolen from us, stolen from us in a system that was built by establishment politicians like Susan Collins.”

The controversies have become a flashpoint in the competitive Democratic primary ahead of the June 9 vote, where Platner faces two-term Gov. Janet Mills, who enjoys support from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other establishment Democrats. Progressive figures like Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders have backed Platner instead.

Warren’s Defense and Questions of Consistency

When asked about the issues by HuffPost, Warren downplayed them:

“Look, he has apologized for that, and he’s out there talking to the people of Maine every single day.”

Critics have pointed to a perceived double standard. Warren previously wrote a strongly worded 2025 letter opposing Pete Hegseth’s nomination for Defense Secretary, citing concerns over tattoos and potential “insider threat” reports from fellow service members. Her swift dismissal of Platner’s far more explicit past symbols and statements has raised eyebrows among those who see inconsistency in how she applies scrutiny to political allies versus opponents.

The endorsement highlights deep divisions within the Democratic Party in Maine. While recent polling shows Platner with a significant lead over Mills in the primary and even competitive against Collins in a general election matchup, the baggage attached to his candidacy could complicate efforts to present a unified front.

Platner’s campaign continues to lean into his outsider image and veteran status, but the episode underscores Warren’s willingness to overlook past controversies when they involve a candidate aligned with her vision of “big, structural change.” Whether Maine voters will share that tolerance remains to be seen as the primary approaches.
