Vice President Kamala Harris has been a figure in American politics for a long time, but it is her recent proposals that raise serious questions about her ability to lead with clarity and conviction.
On Friday, Harris unveiled a plan to increase the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for families with newborns, a move that, on the surface, appears to be a significant boost for struggling families. However, this proposal starkly contrasts her past actions and reveals a pattern of political flip-flopping that has become all too familiar.
In 2017, Harris voted against the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), a landmark bill under then-President Donald Trump that doubled the CTC from $1,000 to $2,000. The bill also raised the maximum qualifying income for the credit, making it accessible to more American families.
At the time, Harris opposed the TCJA, arguing that it unfairly benefited the wealthy at the expense of middle-class families. Fast forward to 2024, and Harris is now championing an expansion of the very same credit she once opposed, proposing to raise it to $6,000 for families with newborns.
This sudden shift in policy raises important questions: What does Kamala Harris truly stand for? Can the American people trust a leader who changes her stance based on the political winds? Harris’s proposal is undoubtedly appealing on the surface, but it is difficult to reconcile her current position with her past actions.
The reality is that Americans deserve a candidate who is consistent and transparent, someone who will stand by their principles and not bend to political expediency.
Moreover, Harris’s inconsistency extends beyond the CTC. Just days before her announcement, Republican vice-presidential nominee J.D. Vance suggested expanding the CTC to $5,000 per child, not just newborns. Harris’s proposal, which surpasses Vance’s figure on face value, feels less like a well-thought-out policy and more like an attempt to outdo her political opponents.

The media: “How insulting and rude to childless Americans!”

This pattern of behavior — adopting and amplifying the ideas of others — has become a hallmark of her campaign. Former President Trump has even accused Harris of being a “copycat” for adopting his proposal to exempt service workers from taxes on their tips, a policy he had previously championed.
Harris’s flip-flopping doesn’t stop at tax policies. Her rhetoric is also filled with contradictions, particularly when it comes to fiscal responsibility. On one hand, Harris promises to provide significant financial assistance to families, such as her proposed $25,000 down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers. On the other hand, she claims she will balance the federal budget.
These two promises are in direct conflict with one another. You cannot increase federal spending and provide substantial tax breaks while simultaneously balancing the budget without imposing severe financial burdens elsewhere — likely on the very middle-class families she claims to support.
It’s this lack of coherence that makes it difficult to take Harris seriously as a candidate. A serious leader would present a comprehensive plan that aligns with their long-term goals, not a patchwork of policies designed to win votes in the short term. Harris’s proposals, while seemingly appealing on the surface, are riddled with inconsistencies that undermine her credibility.
She either believes in increasing federal taxes and expanding the budget, or she wants to balance and cut it. The American people deserve to know where she truly stands, but based on her track record, it’s clear that Harris is more interested in playing both sides than providing honest leadership.
The implications of this flip-flopping are particularly concerning when it comes to policies affecting children and families. Harris’s inconsistency on the CTC is just one example of how her policies are not rooted in a genuine concern for the American people, but rather in a desire to stay politically relevant.
This lack of commitment is dangerous, especially when the well-being of our children is at stake. American families need a leader who is steadfast in their support, not one who changes their position based on political convenience.
As we approach the next election, the American people must consider not just the promises being made, but the consistency and sincerity behind them. Harris’s track record of flip-flopping on critical issues like the CTC should give every American pause.
In a time when Americans are struggling under the weight of inflation, rising costs, and economic uncertainty, America cannot afford to have a leader who lies and flip-flops in their vision and is inconsistent in their policies.
