The discovery and dismantling of a nearly 3,000-foot narcotics smuggling tunnel beneath the U.S.-Mexico border in early April points to the Trump administration’s commitment to safeguarding American lives.
Located between Tijuana and San Diego, the “highly sophisticated” tunnel, equipped with lighting, ventilation, and a track system, was designed to funnel illegal drugs into the U.S., threatening communities with increased crime and addiction.
U.S. Border Patrol agents, working with Homeland Security Investigations and Mexican authorities, thwarted this operation, ensuring no contraband reached American streets. This success builds on the administration’s zero-tolerance approach, evidenced by the unprecedented zero illegal immigrant releases in May 2025, as reported by the New York Post.
By disrupting such tunnels, agents prevent foreign terrorist organizations from exploiting vulnerabilities, protecting families and businesses across the nation.
Strengthening National Security Through Vigilance
The tunnel, stretching 2,918 feet and reaching 50 feet deep, was found under the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, with an exit planned near a San Diego warehouse, per U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Barricades and freshly tiled entrances in Tijuana’s Nueva Tijuana neighborhood showed smugglers’ efforts to evade detection, but Border Patrol’s diligence prevailed. CBP’s plan to pour thousands of gallons of concrete into the tunnel ensures it cannot be reused, a critical step in blocking drug cartels and potential terrorists.
“Disruption of narcotics smuggling tunnels is critical to protecting American lives,” said Jeffrey D. Stalnaker, acting chief patrol agent of the San Diego Sector.
The zero illegal immigrant releases in May, a 93% drop from May 2024’s 117,905 apprehensions, reflect Trump’s robust border policies, reducing strain on communities and enhancing safety, per Fox News’ June reports.

The decommissioning of this tunnel, the 95th in San Diego since 1993, highlights the ongoing battle against cross-border crime and its direct benefits for Americans.
By halting drug smuggling, the operation protects neighborhoods from the opioid crisis, which claimed over 70,000 lives in 2023, per CDC data.
The Trump administration’s focus on operational control, as noted by National Border Patrol Council president Paul Perez in June 2025, allows agents to prioritize enforcement over processing, unlike the Biden era’s “open border” approach.
This tunnel bust, combined with May’s zero releases, reduces the flow of drugs and illegal crossings, easing pressure on border towns and freeing resources for local schools and hospitals.
