Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell racked up nearly $300,000 in charges on her state-issued credit card during the last fiscal year, according to a report from the Boston Herald. From July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, Campbell’s office spent $288,146.26 using procurement cards, or P-cards, on expenses that included international trips, office celebrations, and visits to places like Disney World. The transactions spanned 31 states and several foreign countries, raising eyebrows about the necessity of such spending.
One of Campbell’s most extravagant trips occurred in late July 2024, when she traveled to France for a conference described by its organizers as “solely focused on commemorating and paying tribute to the achievements and sacrifices of those who fought in Normandy.” This event, held nearly two months after the 80th anniversary of D-Day, cost taxpayers approximately $13,627, with nearly $9,000 spent on luxury chauffeur services and over $2,000 on flights, the Boston Herald reported.
The conference was co-sponsored by the Attorney General Alliance, an organization primarily funded by corporations. Critics argue such events serve as opportunities for lobbyists to cozy up to state attorneys general. More than half of the U.S. state attorneys general attended, according to the Associated Press, highlighting the event’s appeal to political figures.
Other significant expenses included $1,220 for catering an annual holiday party at the Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau in December 2024 and $1,287 in October 2024 for an event to “recognize [Massachusetts State Police]’s successful high-profile takedown involving a high-profile drug trafficking investigation,” as reported by the Boston Herald.
Additional charges included $10,286 to rent overflow space at a hotel for an annual cyber crimes conference in April 2025 and a $548 hotel stay in Canada, according to the same report. These expenditures have drawn scrutiny for their perceived extravagance at taxpayers’ expense.
Campbell has also faced criticism for her reluctance to enforce an audit of the state Legislature, a measure approved by 72% of Massachusetts voters in November 2024. “The taxpayers are footing the bill for the Attorney General’s expensive junkets,” said Paul Diego Carney, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, in a statement to the Boston Herald. “She’s reaping the reward for not auditing the Legislature, which got her a larger budget to spend on highbrow trips. The Attorney General should put as much effort into enforcing the audit of the Legislature … as she does booking out-of-state trips.”
The state Legislature granted Campbell’s office a 12% budget increase for the current fiscal year, which has been used to fund legal challenges against the Trump administration. In the first 100 days of the administration, Campbell initiated over a dozen lawsuits, including actions against the sharing of Medicaid data with federal immigration officials and efforts to restore funding allegedly used to teach English to illegal immigrants, according to The Boston Globe.
The Many Examples of Democrat Fraud Caught in the Act
The questionable spending by Campbell is not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of financial misconduct and fraud associated with some Democrat officials, as evidenced by historical cases. These examples highlight a recurring issue of abuse of power and taxpayer resources, which have fueled distrust among voters.
In 2008, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a Democrat, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice after a scandal involving perjury and misuse of public funds. Kilpatrick had used city resources to cover up an extramarital affair, including authorizing a $8.4 million settlement to silence whistleblowers, according to the Detroit Free Press. The scandal led to his resignation and imprisonment, exposing a blatant misuse of taxpayer money for personal gain.
In Illinois, former Governor Rod Blagojevich, another Democrat, was convicted in 2011 on corruption charges for attempting to sell President Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat. Federal investigators uncovered evidence of Blagojevich soliciting bribes and engaging in pay-to-play schemes, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. His actions not only violated public trust but also demonstrated a willingness to exploit political power for financial benefit.
More recently, in 2019, Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, a Democrat, resigned after an investigation revealed she profited from a self-dealing scheme involving her children’s book series. Pugh sold hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of books to entities like the University of Maryland Medical System, where she sat on the board, according to The Baltimore Sun. The scandal led to her conviction on fraud and tax evasion charges.
In California, a 2020 case exposed fraud in the state’s Employment Development Department (EDD), where Democrat-led oversight failed to prevent widespread unemployment benefit scams during the COVID-19 pandemic. Criminals, including prison inmates, defrauded the EDD of over $11 billion, with estimates suggesting up to $31 billion in improper payments, according to a 2021 report by the California State Auditor. The lack of robust oversight under Democrat leadership allowed this massive fraud to flourish.
Another example comes from New York, where former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, was convicted in 2015 for a kickback scheme. Silver funneled state grants to a cancer researcher in exchange for referrals to a law firm that paid him millions, according to The New York Times.
In Massachusetts itself, a 2011 scandal involved Democrat state Representative John Fresolo, who resigned after allegations of misusing campaign funds and inappropriate conduct. An ethics investigation revealed he used campaign money for personal expenses, as reported by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
