Democrat Mayors Tell Congress They Won’t Assist Trump In Deportation Efforts

The American people are growing more and more tired of partisan politics, but that’s what the Democrat Party is doubling down on. Instead of working with Donald Trump on his extremely popular agenda items, they are choosing to play the part of a spoiler and setting up obstacles just to get in the Trump administration’s way. They are not remotely providing any benefit to the American people by suggesting anything in the way of executive decisions or legislative progress.

On the immigration front, Democrats across the country are washing their hands of the issue entirely, choosing to make the deportation process more difficult by telling the Trump administration that they have to seek out the violent criminals that state and local Democrats know about. It’s a move designed to just make the job of the Trump administration’s DHS and DOJ more difficult, that’s it.

Recently, Congress held a hearing on the immigration matter with several Democrat mayors. They again made it clear they don’t want to assist any effort from the federal government to deport violent criminals in their locales. One Democrat mayor said it’s not their “responsibility” to protect their citizens by assisting in getting illegal immigrants out of their community.

Sanctuary City Showdown In Congress

On Wednesday, the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees put the spotlight on four big-city mayors, dragging them in to explain why their sanctuary city policies seem to put illegal immigrants ahead of the folks who keep this country running. The mayors of New York, Denver, Boston, and Chicago faced tough questions, with the committees laying the blame for the immigration crisis square at the feet of the federal government during the Biden years.

Back in January, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer kicked off an investigation into these sanctuary policies, calling them a reckless gamble with public safety. “The pro-illegal alien mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City have implemented reckless, illegal policies that shield criminal aliens from federal immigration enforcement and endanger public safety,” Comer said in a statement that still rings true for the everyday American tired of seeing their neighborhoods turned into testing grounds for progressive experiments. “Criminal alien predators should not be free to roam our communities. State and local governments that refuse to comply with federal immigration enforcement efforts should not receive a penny of federal funding.”

The hearing brought out the big names: New York’s Eric Adams, Denver’s Mike Johnston, Boston’s Michelle Wu, and Chicago’s Brandon Johnson. These mayors, representing cities that have long waved the sanctuary flag, had to answer for how their policies are playing out on the ground. Adams, in particular, walked into the room under a cloud. He’s been battered by criticism over how he’s handled the flood of illegal immigrants into New York — and that’s on top of corruption charges that were recently dropped by the Trump Justice Department. Still, he came out swinging, insisting that being a sanctuary city doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to crime.

“New York City’s status as a sanctuary city does not mean our city will ever be a safe haven for violent criminals,” Adams said in his opening statement, trying to reassure the little guy that he’s not totally out of touch. “It also does not give New York City the authority to violate federal immigration laws. To the contrary, New York City will always comply with city, state, and federal laws, as it does now.”

The other mayors echoed that line, doubling down on their stance that they’ll stick to their own state and local rules when dealing with federal law enforcement. Boston’s Michelle Wu put it plainly: “Massachusetts state law and the Boston Trust Act make clear immigration is federal law enforcement’s responsibility.” It’s a neat sidestep — pointing the finger back at Washington while keeping their hands clean.

But Comer wasn’t buying it. After the opening statements, he went straight for the jugular, grilling the mayors about dangerous immigrants who’ve racked up charges in their cities. He painted a picture of sanctuary policies letting criminals slip through the cracks, with cities refusing to hand suspects over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). One heated exchange with Chicago’s Brandon Johnson stood out. Comer zeroed in on a case involving a violent illegal immigrant — arrested for m*rder, suspected of ties to a foreign gang — who was let back onto the streets instead of being turned over to ICE.

“Will you turn the criminal over to ICE?” Comer pressed Johnson, cutting through the fluff. “With a criminal warrant from the federal government our local law enforcement repeatedly collaborates with federal agents,” Johnson shot back, dodging a straight yes or no.

Comer wasn’t letting it go. “So you’re saying publicly today that you will turn that alien over to ICE in a safe place, like a jail, instead of turning them out on the street and saying ‘here you go, ICE, good luck.’ You will turn them over to ICE?”

“With a criminal warrant, as we have done for 40 years,” Johnson repeated, sticking to his script. Thing is, Chicago’s “Welcoming City Ordinance” ties local cops’ hands, barring them from getting mixed up in civil immigration enforcement or helping federal agents in those kinds of operations. For the little guy in Chicago, that’s cold comfort when the streets feel less safe every day.

This showdown comes as the Trump administration flexes its muscle on illegal immigration — a crisis that hit record highs under Biden, the worst this century. Trump’s immigration czar, Tom Homan, has been vocal about sanctuary cities throwing up roadblocks. “Sanctuary cities want to keep locking us out of jails,” Homan told reporters earlier, summing up the frustration of federal agents trying to do their jobs.

The good news? Things might finally be turning around. New Trump policies seem to be making a dent — illegal border crossings have dropped a staggering 94% over the past year, according to the border patrol chief’s recent comments to CBS News. For the little guy who’s been stuck footing the bill for this chaos — whether through taxes or lost safety — that’s a glimmer of hope. But as long as sanctuary cities keep playing by their own rules, the fight’s far from over.

What do you think about Sanctuary Cities? Should they be allowed to harbor illegal immigrants? Sound off in the comments below.

No federal funds for any of those cities. They all give illegals everything, and the citizens get nothing.

If these cities have enough money to support their illegals, then they have enough money for any other thing so they do NOT need any federal funds, but they must still pay their federal taxes.

If these cities claim that their illegals are the problem for the federal government, then we should not only use ICE but also the national guard to round these criminals up so we can have them all deported where they belong.

If any citizen is hurt or seriously injured or worst the city or the state should be liable for millions of dollars and not a copper cent shouldn’t be from taxpayers’ money, they have no fault on what their mayors are doing.
