The Democratic Party is sliding into dangerous territory, openly embracing socialism and its radical champions while turning its back on the principles that built America. DNC Chairman Ken Martin recently made this clear, welcoming socialists into the fold with open arms. On Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, Martin declared, “I don’t think they make it difficult at all. At the end of the day, the difference between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party is that we’re a big tent.”
He went on to say, “And that includes people from all different ideological wings. Unlike the Republicans who expect everyone to march lock step over one agenda, we actually welcome dissent and debate in our party.” This so-called big tent is starting to resemble a stage for extremist ideas that most Americans flatly reject.
Leading the charge are figures like Zohran Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose prominence signals a troubling shift. Mamdani, now campaigning to become New York City’s mayor, pushes policies that sound like they were ripped from a Soviet-era manifesto. Free buses, city-run grocery stores, rent freezes, and even “seizing the means of production” are central to his platform. These ideas are not just impractical, they are a direct attack on the free market principles that have driven American prosperity for generations.
Ocasio-Cortez, a media darling of the far-left, is no less radical. Her “Green New Deal” proposes a multi-trillion-dollar overhaul of the economy, aiming for net-zero emissions while promising government-guaranteed jobs for all. She has also joined forces with Senator Bernie Sanders for his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, which, according to its website, seeks to combat “the Oligarchs and corporate interests who have so much power.” This rhetoric paints wealth and success as evils to be eradicated, a hallmark of socialist ideology that demonizes achievement.
The rise of these figures is not a fringe phenomenon, it is gaining ground within the party. A CNN/SSRS poll from March 16 found that 10% of Democrats view Ocasio-Cortez as the leader who best embodies the party’s core values, while 8% chose Sanders. Former Vice President Kamala Harris trailed closely at 9%. This growing influence of self-described socialists is reshaping the Democratic Party’s identity, pulling it further from the mainstream.
Other Democrats are following suit. In Minneapolis, mayoral candidate Omar Fateh has laid out a platform mirroring Mamdani’s radical vision. Fateh calls for rent freezes, rapid minimum wage increases, and a refusal to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. These policies, dressed up as progressive compassion, threaten to destabilize local economies and undermine law and order.
The party’s leadership seems unperturbed by this leftward lurch. Martin’s defense of the big tent suggests a willingness to tolerate, if not embrace, these extreme positions. Yet, this strategy is backfiring with voters. Polls from July by The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and Gallup revealed the Democratic Party’s favorability at historic lows. Americans are not buying the socialist pitch, and the party’s refusal to rein in its radicals is costing it dearly.
Even some Democrats are raising alarms. On C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, one caller criticized the growing influence of “so-called progressives” like Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani, and Sanders. Another caller, however, urged the party to lean even harder into their lead. This division highlights a growing fracture within the Democratic base, as moderates grapple with the party’s increasingly radical direction.
Public sentiment is clear. A 2021 Gallup poll showed only 38% of Americans view socialism positively, while 60% favor capitalism. Among Republicans, just 9% see socialism favorably, and independents lean heavily against it at 41%. A 2020 NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll echoed this, finding that while half of Democrats view socialism favorably, only 23% of independents and 7% of Republicans do. These numbers reveal a stark disconnect between the Democratic Party’s leftward shift and the full American electorate.
The rejection of socialism is not just about numbers, it is about values. Americans cherish individual liberty, hard work, and the opportunity to succeed without government overreach. Socialist policies like those pushed by Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez threaten to smother these principles under layers of bureaucracy and state control. City-run grocery stores and rent freezes may sound benevolent, but they risk strangling innovation and personal responsibility.
The Democratic Party’s internal conflicts further expose its vulnerabilities. Martin’s clash with gun control activist David Hogg, a former DNC vice chair, added to the chaos. Hogg’s plan to primary incumbent Democrats was met with resistance from Martin, leading to Hogg’s ouster from his position in June, as reported by Politico. This infighting reveals a party struggling to balance its moderate and radical wings, with the latter gaining dangerous momentum.
History offers a really clear warning to anyone willing to heed it. Socialist policies have consistently failed, from the economic stagnation of the Soviet Union to the ongoing collapse of Venezuela. Americans see through the rosy promises of free handouts and government control. They know that socialism’s track record is one of scarcity, inefficiency, and eroded freedoms.
The Democratic Party’s embrace of socialism is not just a policy misstep, it is a betrayal of the American spirit. As figures like Mamdani, Ocasio-Cortez, and Fateh push for government takeovers of entire industries, voters are turning away in droves. The party’s record-low favorability is a clear signal that Americans want no part of this radical agenda.
If Democrats continue down this path, they risk more than electoral losses. They risk alienating a nation built on the promise of freedom and opportunity. The American people are watching, and they are ready to reject socialism at the ballot box. The Democratic Party must decide whether it will listen or double down on a failed ideology that threatens the very foundation of the country.
What do you think about the Democrats being “undisturbed” by a growing wing of socialism in their ranks? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
Good to know. I am looking forward to finding out who the Democrat leader of the Pro Second Amendment and Pro life wings of the party are.
No such critters among the Democrats…
USA was born in fires of socialism with “For the common welfare” instead of “for the good of the king”…
However, Democrats are way beyond socialism and into full blown Communism dictatorship!
They need to change the title of the party = Socialists/Communists party because a Socialist is NOT a democrat – a Communist is NOT a democrat…
