Illegal immigration proved to be a major issue in the 2024 election cycle. Many Americans felt as though the crisis at the Southern Border had gotten massively out of control, and they had every right to believe that. Illegal migrants had entered the country in record numbers over the past several years, and were causing a burden on the economy. Not only that, but many suspected terrorists had entered the United States illegally as well.

During the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris administration, migrants entering the United States illegally skyrocketed. It felt as if the Biden administration was purposely opening the border and seeing how many they could let in. Not only that, but once these migrants made their way in and started occupying cities and jobs in America, the Democrat Party wanted legal citizens to basically just deal with it.

But for the average American, just dealing with it was not an option. They were seeing their jobs being taken by illegal immigrants. They were also seeing their children’s schools being overrun by migrant children who couldn’t speak English. These were issues that the Democrats turned a blind eye to, and it’s partly why Donald Trump was able to win the presidential election. Even those on the Left had come to realize that illegal immigration had gotten out of control and the Democrat Party wasn’t going to do anything to stop it. Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, admitted that the border needs to be secured:

FETTERMAN: “I don’t understand why it’s controversial to say we need a secure border. We want to provide the American dream for any migrant, but it seems very difficult when you have 300,000 people showing up at our border to do that.”

Trump however, has promised to close the border once he assumes office and also promised to deport those who entered the country illegally. But because of these promises, Democrats and Joe Biden are looking to throw a wrench in Trump’s plans with this latest scheme.

Senate Democrats Push Biden for Sweeping Immigration Actions Before Trump Takes Office

With just weeks left in President Joe Biden’s term, a group of Senate Democrats are urging him to implement significant immigration measures to bring more migrants into the United States and secure their ability to stay indefinitely. Their request comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to assume office and signals a stark shift in immigration policy.

This week, Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), and Alex Padilla (D-CA) penned a letter to Biden, advocating for sweeping changes to benefit large groups of illegal aliens and other migrants already in the country. “In addition to supporting strong border security, we are eager to ensure that DACA recipients, TPS holders, and other immigrants who are critical members of our communities and economies are not forgotten during this busy time,” the Senators wrote.

One of their key requests is for Biden to maximize protections for hundreds of thousands of individuals currently enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. They are pushing for these recipients to have their status extended for the longest period allowed under Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines.

Additionally, the Senators are calling on Biden to extend and re-designate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain countries. This would not only allow migrants recently arriving from these nations to remain in the U.S. but also grant those already here extended stays beyond their current allowances. “What I take is what I hear from this incoming administration, they’re going to engage in mass deportation and nobody is safe,” Cortez Masto said to MSNBC. “That’s why I’m asking the administration to come in now to protect some of the immigrant communities — TPS recipients, DACA recipients.”

The Biden administration has already overseen a historic expansion of the foreign-born population in the United States, adding nearly seven million since January 2021. As a result, the number of foreign nationals residing in the U.S. has reached almost 52 million. The Senators’ push emphasizes the growing divide between Democrats’ vision for immigration policy and the incoming Trump administration’s stated plans to enforce stricter measures.

For many Democrats, these last weeks of Biden’s term represent a critical opportunity to cement protections for immigrant communities before policy shifts take effect under new leadership that will come with the Trump administration. This is also an example of the Left ignoring the mandate that was brought forth by American voters who declared on Election Day that enough is enough with the illegal immigration problem in this country. And their declaration was clearly seen when Donald Trump was able to win reelection by running on stopping the crisis at the Southern Border that has harmed so many everyday Americans.
