In a stunning twist that’s got Washington buzzing, fresh polls reveal that a whopping two-thirds of Democrats are cheering on the federal government shutdown, which has dragged into its fourth week. Meanwhile, most Republicans are fed up and want it over, per the latest data from Rasmussen Reports dropped this Tuesday.
This isn’t just some minor spat—it’s a full-blown standoff that’s paralyzing parts of the government. The survey highlights how 51% of likely voters are oddly okay with keeping things shuttered.
But dig deeper, and it’s clear who’s fueling this fire: Democrats are all in. An eye-popping 43% of them strongly approve of the shutdown, with another 23% giving it a somewhat thumbs-up. That’s a solid bloc loving the gridlock.
On the flip side, Republicans aren’t buying it. A hefty 41% strongly disapprove, and 12% somewhat disapprove, showing a clear majority wanting to get back to business. Still, 41% of GOP folks are on board with the closure, maybe seeing some upside.
House Republicans stepped up and passed a straightforward continuing resolution to fund the government at existing levels and end the mess. But over in the Senate, Democrats—despite being the minority—are wielding the filibuster like a weapon to block it.
Their demand? More cash for health care programs, including those Obamacare insurance subsidies set to lapse—ironically, under laws that Democrats rammed through themselves years ago.
This whole debacle screams politics over people. Democrats are framing the shutdown as their big stand against President Donald Trump, flexing their muscles to show they’re not backing down.
Republicans, who’ve backed shutdowns before when it suited them, are mostly against this one because it’s hamstringing the Trump administration’s ability to deliver for Americans.
Yet that 41% of Republicans supporting it might be banking on Trump’s promise to wield the shutdown as a tool to slash bloated government departments, trimming the fat that’s long overdue.
Or perhaps they’re playing the long game, figuring the blame will eventually stick to Democrats once everyday folks feel the pinch and turn against them.
So far, though, that shift hasn’t materialized, and you can bet the farm it’s tied to the nonstop slant in media coverage that always seems to favor one side.
When Republicans kick off a shutdown, the headlines scream doom and gloom, painting it as the end of the world.
But flip the script to a Democrat-led holdout, and suddenly it’s spun as a heroic crusade for noble causes—like cutting health care costs, even though it’s battling the skyrocketing prices from their own Obamacare fiasco, shoved through back in 2010.
The Rasmussen poll reached out to 1,200 likely voters over October 15, 16, and 19, carrying a margin of error of plus or minus three percent—solid numbers that paint a clear picture of a divided America.
