DOJ Targets North Carolina’s Voter Roll Failures
The Department of Justice, under President Donald Trump’s leadership, took decisive action on Tuesday by filing a lawsuit against North Carolina and its State Board of Elections for violating federal election law.
The suit alleges that the state’s practice of allowing voter registration without identification, such as a driver’s license, breaches the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), compromising the integrity of its voter rolls.
The complaint boldly states, “Defendants have failed to maintain accurate lists in North Carolina’s computerized statewide voter registration in violation of Section 303(a)(5) of HAVA and the sacred trust that the people of the State of North Carolina have put in them to ensure the fairness and integrity of elections for Federal office in the state, necessitating this litigation.”
This move emphasizes Trump’s unwavering commitment to securing elections and restoring public confidence in the democratic process.
Trump’s Executive Order Drives Election Integrity
President Trump’s March executive order set a clear mandate for the Justice Department to enforce federal election laws rigorously, prioritizing honest and transparent voting processes.
The order declares, “Above all, elections must be honest and worthy of the public trust. That requires voting methods that produce a voter-verifiable paper record allowing voters to efficiently check their votes to protect against fraud or mistake. Election-integrity standards must be modified accordingly. It is the policy of my Administration to enforce Federal law and to protect the integrity of our election process.”
Trump’s proactive stance empowers the DOJ to crack down on lax voter roll practices, ensuring states like North Carolina uphold the standards necessary to prevent fraud and maintain electoral fairness.
DOJ’s Civil Rights Division Takes Charge
Leading the charge, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division emphasized the critical need for accurate voter rolls.
She stated, “Accurate voter registration rolls are critical to ensure that elections in North Carolina are conducted fairly, accurately, and without fraud.”
Dhillon further warned, “The Department of Justice will not hesitate to file suit against jurisdictions that maintain inaccurate voter registration rolls in violation of federal voting laws.” Her resolve reflects the Trump administration’s dedication to rooting out vulnerabilities in the electoral system, protecting the sanctity of every vote.
North Carolina Admits Voter Roll Shortcomings
Sam Hayes, executive director of the North Carolina elections board, admitted to deficiencies in the state’s voter registration process, acknowledging the DOJ’s concerns. He told CBS17, “I was only recently notified of this action by the United States Department of Justice.”
“We are still reviewing the complaint, but the failure to collect the information required by HAVA has been well documented. Rest assured that I am committed to bringing North Carolina into compliance with federal law.”
The state’s acknowledgment of its failures validates the Trump administration’s push for accountability, as the DOJ’s lawsuit signals an effort to ensure election integrity nationwide, safeguarding the democratic process for all Americans.
