Biden Vetoes Bipartisan JUDGES Act, Blocking Federal Judicial Expansion
On January 3, outgoing President Joe Biden vetoed the JUDGES Act of 2024, denying the judicial system a chance to address its growing caseload. The bipartisan legislation aimed to create 66 new federal district judgeships, staggered across three presidential administrations. Crucially, the act would have enabled President-elect Donald Trump to appoint over 20 additional judges during his second term.
The bill had passed the Senate with unanimous consent, supported by over six Democratic co-sponsors. However, Biden’s veto followed a withdrawal of support after Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election.
In his statement, Biden questioned the bill’s motives, suggesting it was less about judicial economy and more about political maneuvering. “S. 4199 would create new judgeships in States where Senators have sought to hold open existing judicial vacancies,” Biden claimed.
Republicans saw the bill as a way to alleviate backlogs, particularly in immigration-related cases. The added judgeships could have expedited criminal cases involving illegal aliens, allowing faster deportations.
Republicans Advance Tougher Immigration Laws Amid Judicial Gridlock
With the judicial expansion blocked, Republicans are pushing forward on immigration reforms. The House is advancing the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, which seeks harsher deportation penalties for illegal aliens convicted of crimes like domestic abuse or s*xual offenses.
Representative Laurel Lee, R-Fla., underscored the bill’s importance, referencing the tragic death of Laken Riley, who was k*lled by an illegal immigrant with a prior criminal record.
“We passed the Laken Riley Act to give our law enforcement the tools needed to keep criminals off our streets before they threaten innocent lives,” Lee stated. The Senate is set to vote on the measure after clearing a filibuster.
Representative Andy Harris, R-Md., highlighted the urgency of addressing the more than 1.4 million illegal aliens with active deportation orders. “Congressman Harris has been very vocal about the fact that these individuals must be deported,” said a spokeswoman for Harris.
The veto of the JUDGES Act leaves the judiciary under strain, with a 30% increase in filings since 1990 and no new judgeships created in two decades. Republicans are now focused on confirming Trump’s judicial nominees and advancing immigration legislation to alleviate pressure on the system.
With Trump poised to surpass previous presidents in judicial appointments, Republicans see this as a critical avenue for reform amid growing judicial and immigration challenges.
How would you grade Biden’s handling of the southern border? Do you agree with the Republicans’ plans to increase border security? Let us know in the comment section below!
Obviously Jokementia Bribery gets an ‘F’ grade in everything… except for being an evil lying criminal/murdering dictator!
So the senile old man has cart Blanche to continue the illegal rush to our southern borders. I would call this outright treason.
No border = no country
I will never understand the Hur statement that Biden was so forgetful that he did not realize he’d committed a crime, this crime was when he was a senator and VP. And ignorance of the law is no excuse. What universe was this prosecutor living in, just too scared to bring charges.IMO
My reading on what Hur said was Biden’s not competent to stand trial, which begs the question then, how can he be competent enough to stay in office?
The question is, how do we handle his mishandling of the immigration problem? He has flooded the country with illegal aliens, using them as pawns for his own purposes.
Trump needs to fix this problem!
