Trump ends Biden’s immigrant app loophole

Moments after the new president was sworn in on Monday, Trump administration officials took swift action to shut down a mobile app that allowed migrants to schedule appointments at U.S.-Mexico border entry points.

The app, known as CBP One, had been a critical tool for migrants without visas to seek legal entry into the United States. By terminating the app, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) effectively canceled all existing appointments, leaving thousands of migrants in limbo.

This move is part of a broader push by the incoming Trump administration to enforce stricter border policies. The crackdown comes despite a significant drop in migration numbers over the past six months.

In December, CBP recorded 96,048 encounters with foreign nationals at the border. Of those, nearly half — 48,722 — presented themselves at ports of entry seeking formal admission into the United States.

For comparison, in January 2021, the last full month with fewer than 100,000 encounters before December, CBP encountered 78,414 individuals. At that time, only 3,098 sought entry through legal ports, while the remainder were intercepted after crossing the border illegally.

The CBP One app had been central to the Biden administration’s efforts to create “legal” pathways for migrants seeking refuge in the United States. By encouraging appointments through the app, the administration aimed to streamline the asylum process and reduce illegal crossings.

However, President Trump has signaled a return to his first-term border policies. Today, he is expected to sign 10 executive orders, many of which are designed to dismantle pathways established by his predecessor.

Among these measures is a plan to reinstate the controversial “remain in Mexico” policy, formally known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP).

This policy, implemented during Trump’s first term, required asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while awaiting the resolution of their U.S. asylum cases. Between 2019 and 2021, around 70,000 migrants were returned to Mexico under the program.

The shutdown of CBP One and the reintroduction of policies like MPP underscore the new administration’s hardline approach to immigration.

And, according to a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 registered voters, 55% of Americans support declaring the border crisis a national emergency.

That includes 62% of Hispanic voters.

As Trump’s policies take effect, the dismantling of the CBP One app serves as a clear signal of his administration’s intent to roll back Biden-era immigration measures and impose stricter controls on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Do you support Donald Trump’s approach to stopping illegal immigration? Do you think he will do a better job at handling it as opposed to former President Biden? Let us know down in the comments below!
