Across the United States, a growing consensus has emerged among Americans from diverse political backgrounds: the participation of biological males in women’s sports raises significant concerns about fairness and competition. Polls and public discussions reveal that many, regardless of party affiliation, believe that biological differences—such as muscle mass, bone density, and testosterone levels—can create an uneven playing field in women’s athletics.
This sentiment, rooted in a desire to protect the integrity of female sports, has fueled heated debates in schools, state legislatures, and online platforms, with citizens calling for policies that prioritize equitable opportunities for female athletes.
This widespread agreement has placed pressure on policymakers to address the issue, as parents, athletes, and advocates argue that allowing biological males to compete in women’s categories can diminish the achievements of female competitors. From conservative strongholds to more progressive communities, the conversation often centers on balancing inclusion with the need to maintain a level of fairness that respects the physical distinctions between s*xes.
While opinions differ on how to approach transgender inclusion, the shared view that women’s sports should remain a protected space for biological females has gained traction, setting the stage for high-profile interventions like the one unfolding in California.
Donald Trump Threatens Newsom Over Transgender Issue
President Donald Trump has seized on this issue, threatening to cut federal funding to California if the state does not reverse its policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump declared, “California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow ‘MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.’ THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS. Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to.”
The president’s remarks spotlight AB Hernandez, a California high school junior who was born male and now identifies as a transgender woman. Hernandez recently dominated the women’s long jump and triple jump at the Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Masters Meet and is slated to compete in the CIF state championships in Fresno this Friday and Saturday. Trump noted, “As a Male, he was a less than average competitor. As a Female, this transitioned person is practically unbeatable.”
Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order tying federal funding to restrictions on transgender athletes in women’s sports. California is not the first state in his crosshairs—Maine faced similar scrutiny in February when the administration launched a probe into potential Title IX violations, putting $250 million in annual federal funding at risk.
That investigation, coupled with a demand for a “full-throated” apology from Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills, ended with the release of funds amid litigation and negotiations.
MUST WATCH: President Trump just decimated Maine’s lawless Governor Janet T. Mills right to her face for refusing to stop men in women’s sports:
“Good. See you in court… enjoy your life after governor. I don’t think you’ll be in elected office.”

Trump’s latest directive targets California with a call for “local authorities, if necessary, to not allow” a transgender athlete to compete in this weekend’s state finals, labeling the situation “totally ridiculous.” He is set to discuss the matter with California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose own comments earlier this year on a podcast with conservative pundit Charlie Kirk—calling transgender participation in women’s sports “deeply unfair”—have added fuel to the fire. Trump wrote, “The Governor, himself, said it is ‘UNFAIR.’ I will speak to him today to find out which way he wants to go???”

The administration’s focus on California highlights a national debate that transcends party lines, with many Americans united in their call for policies that ensure fairness in women’s sports. The outcome of Trump’s conversation with Newsom could reshape California’s approach and determine whether the state risks losing substantial federal support.
