Trump’s U.S. Attorney General Pick Down To Four Candidates Says Sources

There’s many appointments Donald Trump and his transition team have to work out over the next several weeks and months. A few of them are extremely critical though, and stand above the rest in terms of attention from the media. For the next few weeks, the roles of secretary of state, attorney general, and the secretary of the treasury will be on the minds of political commentators and pundits.

Donald Trump has not yet indicated who would fill those roles yet, but according to reports, we do know that the U.S. attorney general role is down to just a handful of candidates. Four names are standing above the rest for consideration, according to sources with Newsmax, the Washington Post, and D.C. insiders.

U.S. Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) are being considered as “high on the list” for the attorney general role at this moment. Many insiders believe that Mike Lee is going get the nod when all is said and done, though no decision has been reached just yet.

The Washington Post has also reported that the former Trump admin director of national intelligence, John Ratcliffe, is in the running as well. He was a U.S. Representative from Texas and has experience as a federal attorney, so it would make sense to give him the role. He has rapport with Donald Trump and a wide variety of fitting experience.

According to an inside source with Newsmax, the Trump transition team is also eyeing the former Secretary of Labor, Eugene Scalia, as a viable candidate for the coveted attorney general role. Scalia has a strong history with the Trump team from his time with the first Trump administration. He’s also the son of the highly-regarded, late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

One consideration that Donald Trump and his team are factoring in is the fact that they will only have a slim majority in the U.S. Senate chamber. The Republicans will have a 53 vote majority compared to the 47 that will be aligning with the Democrats (two of the U.S. Senators being independents who will be caucusing with the blue party).

Donald Trump and his allies do not want any weak Republican U.S. Senators making this process more difficult than it needs to be. So they may feel incentivized to make a pick like Mike Lee, who would almost certainly walk his way into the U.S. attorney general role with no real objections from the Senate GOP.

A pick of someone who is more of an outsider or more controversial would possibly create a U.S. Senate chamber fight that Donald Trump may not have a stomach for right now. All indications thus far are that he means business when it comes to his second term in office. He wants to get to work fast.

Democrats have been saying for months now that Donald Trump would be picking the so-called “dangerous” Mike Davis, who is an attorney for Donald Trump right now. They’ve been fear-mongering him as a potential pick, saying he’s a radical “Christian nationalist” who wants to install theocracy in America for good.

Not only is this not true, but Mike Davis himself has said that he is not being considered for this role and that no one has reached out to him about the role at all. He poured cold water on that idea with a tweet from November 8th that said he is “not going into” Donald Trump’s administration.

Currently on Polymarket, a political betting website, Mike Lee stands above the rest as the most likely to win the U.S. attorney general spot. John Ratcliffe is in second place, according to bettors. Rounding out the list include others like former federal prosecutor and Trump lawyer Todd Blanche.

There are also rumblings from political commentators online about the possibility of Jonathan Turley, one of the nation’s most respected constitutional lawyers and professors (George Washington University Law), being called up for consideration for the role.

Who would you like to see fill the U.S. attorney general role for Donald Trump in his second term? Let us know in the comments below.
