Biden EPA Funnels Billions to Democrat-Linked Green Group
The Biden administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $5 billion in taxpayer funds to a green energy organization led by top Democrat donors, raising serious questions about political favoritism and misuse of public money.
In April 2024, the EPA selected the Coalition for Green Capital (CGC) as one of the beneficiaries of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. However, a Daily Caller News Foundation review of Federal Election Commission (FEC) data reveals that the organization’s leadership has poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into Democrat candidates and liberal causes over the years.
Reed Hundt, the group’s former CEO and chairman, has personally donated nearly $60,000 to Democrat candidates and affiliated organizations since 2013. His successor, Richard Kauffman, who took over in January 2024, has contributed more than $600,000 to Democrats since 2020, according to FEC filings.
Massive Donations to Key Democrat Causes
The records show that Hundt gave $10,000 to both the Harris Victory Fund and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in 2024, and previously sent $10,000 to the Democratic State Central Committee of Maryland in 2016.
Meanwhile, Kauffman made a $150,000 donation to the DNC in 2020 and followed up with another $20,900 contribution in 2024. That same year, he sent $50,000 to the Harris Victory Fund. Kauffman also backed state-level Democrat Party organizations and contributed to Senate candidates like former Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey during his 2024 re-election bid.
A Nonprofit with Political Ties
The Coalition for Green Capital is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, meaning it is legally prohibited from directly or indirectly engaging in politics. Despite this restriction, the organization’s leadership maintains deep financial and political ties to Democrat circles.
When questioned about the conflict between its tax-exempt status and the political activities of its leadership, a CGC spokesperson dodged the issue, instead highlighting the group’s record of financing green projects.
“Between 2009 and 2023, CGC and its network mobilized more than $25 billion in public and private capital across America to deliver more affordable electricity, clean air and water, as well as the power to help ensure America’s AI leadership,” the spokesperson said.
From the Clinton and Obama Administrations to Biden’s Billions
The group’s leadership also boasts strong connections to previous Democrat administrations. Reed Hundt previously served as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission under Bill Clinton and was a close ally of Al Gore. Richard Kauffman worked as a senior adviser to Energy Secretary Steven Chu under Barack Obama.
Adding fuel to the controversy, Hundt’s personal account on X (formerly Twitter) reportedly featured anti-Trump posts, including those supporting efforts to remove Donald Trump from the ballot, before being deleted. Hundt has not responded to media inquiries.
Democrat Insiders Fill the Ranks
The Coalition for Green Capital is heavily populated by Democrat insiders. Its board of directors includes:
- David Hayes, a climate adviser to President Joe Biden.
- Cecilia Martinez, a former official on the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
- Julie Greene Collier, chief of staff for the AFL-CIO, a major labor union that endorsed Biden and Kamala Harris in 2024 and donated to Democrats during that election cycle.
The organization has also received funding from Left-leaning environmental nonprofits, including the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the ClimateWorks Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
A “Slush Fund” for Democrat Donors?
Critics argue that the Biden administration used taxpayer money to prop up its political allies.
“Coalition for Green Capital, like so many organizations funded by the Biden administration, has no business receiving a dollar of funding from the federal government, much less billions of dollars,” said Parker Thayer, an investigative researcher at the Capital Research Center. “It is plain to see that the organization is intended to be a slush fund for bailing out the floundering green energy investments of the Democratic Party’s biggest donors.”
EPA Under Fire
The Coalition for Green Capital isn’t alone. Two other organizations chosen by the Biden EPA to receive billions — Power Forward Communities and Climate United — are similarly packed with Democrat operatives, raising further concerns about cronyism and political favoritism.
These questionable connections have drawn scrutiny from congressional Republicans, who launched investigations into the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund in May 2024. Current EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin is reportedly working to claw back as much taxpayer money as possible from these groups.
The growing scandal highlights the Biden administration’s cozy relationship with Democrat donors — and the billions in taxpayer funds being funneled to their green energy allies.
