Border Patrol sees highest application numbers in history

Surge in Border Patrol Applications Reflects Strong Public Support

The U.S. Border Patrol is experiencing a remarkable wave of enthusiasm from Americans eager to serve at the nation’s borders, with applications soaring since President Donald Trump took office in January.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reports that from January to April 2025, the agency received 34,650 applications—a staggering 44% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This unprecedented surge highlights the widespread public support for Trump’s robust border security policies and the renewed sense of purpose among Americans committed to protecting the homeland.

“This historic spike in applicants is a direct reflection of the renewed national commitment to border security under the leadership of President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection,” CBP stated.

January, coinciding with Trump’s inauguration, marked the highest number of applications in the agency’s 101-year history, signaling a clear mandate for stronger borders backed by the American people.

Leadership and Recruitment Drive Record Success

Under the guidance of Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks, Texas’ first border czar, the first quarter of 2025 has been hailed as “the most successful four-month recruitment stretch in the agency’s history.”

Banks credited the administration’s focus, stating, “The continued surge in applications speaks volumes about the pride and purpose Americans see in joining the U.S. Border Patrol. We thank President Trump and Secretary [Kristi] Noem for their leadership and commitment to strengthening our workforce and mission readiness.”

The recruitment boom follows strategic enhancements, including targeted hiring incentives and outreach to veterans and law enforcement professionals, whose mission-ready experience bolsters the agency’s capabilities. CBP noted that the increase reflects “the public’s confidence in the Trump administration’s enforcement priorities and the sense of purpose Americans feel in answering the call to protect the homeland.” This groundswell of support highlights a national consensus favoring secure borders, a cornerstone of Trump’s agenda endorsed by the Border Patrol union.

Reversing Biden-Era Challenges

The current optimism stands in sharp contrast to the dire challenges faced under the Biden administration, when Border Patrol morale plummeted, and the agency saw record resignations, retirements, and suicides.

In 2022, 17 agents took their lives, a crisis highlighted by Chris Cabrera, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, during a 2023 congressional hearing.

“To put that in perspective,” Cabrera said, comparing the loss to the New York Police Department’s 35,000-strong force, which lost four to suicide. He described the toll of witnessing human trafficking and unaccompanied minors, stating, “We see a lot of stuff out there that the average person doesn’t see. What hits folks the hardest is what happens with the children.”

Cabrera criticized Biden’s “catch and release” policy, which he argued violated federal law by ordering agents to release foreign nationals rather than process them for removal, undermining their national security mission.

“It’s a difficult job. It’s increasingly getting harder by the fact that we’re not put in a position to do the job that we were trained to do,” he said.

With an attrition rate of 6.9%—72% higher than the Office of Field Operations—and projections of a rise to 9% by 2028, the agency was in desperate need of thousands more agents.

Under Trump’s leadership, these trends have reversed dramatically. The administration’s decisive end to “catch and release” and focus on enforcement have revitalized the agency, with Americans rallying behind a mission to secure the border and uphold the rule of law, as evidenced by the historic application numbers.
